School of Education’s Román, Shaffer honored with Distinguished Teaching Awards

Twelve UW–Madison faculty members have been chosen to receive this year’s Distinguished Teaching Awards, an honor given out since 1953 to recognize some of the university’s finest educators. Those honored have been selected for their distinguished teaching and were nominated by individual faculty members, departments, and student organizations.

Among this year’s honorees are two faculty members with the School of Education. They are:

Chancellor’s Inclusive Excellence Award

Román is an assistant professor with the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, and will receive the Chancellor’s Inclusive Excellence Award. Román’s research investigates the implicit and explicit ideologies reflected in the design and implementation of bilingual and science education programs.

David Williamson Shaffer

Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award

Shaffer is the Sears Bascom Professor of Learning Analytics with the Department of Educational Psychology, and will receive the Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award. Shaffer also holds the title of Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor of Learning Sciences. Shaffer’s work includes establishing the field of quantitative ethnography, which unifies statistical and qualitative research methods to help researchers use the power of “big data” to build more accurate and insightful models of complex and collaborative human activity.

A ceremony to recognize the award recipients will take place on April 25 at 5 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union. RSVP information will be posted on the awards website by Thursday, Feb. 9; the deadline to RSVP is Friday, March 31.
