Wausau ABC affiliate WAOW spotlighted the School Mental Health Collaborative (SMHC) recently, led by UW–Madison’s Stephen Kilgus, Katie Eklund, and Andy Garbacz.
The story, headlined “UW–Madison guides new national center to address lack of school mental health providers,” reports that the researchers have been awarded a $10.4 million federal contract to launch and operate the new national center, which aims “to increase and diversify the number of incoming mental health practitioners.”
The SMHC’s goal is to prepare school mental health providers to better support their students. “Right now we’re in the process of continuing to hire additional employees…this will include coaches that will interact with schools, and data scientist folks,” Kilgus tells WAOW.
Kilgus, Eklund, and Garbacz are all faculty members with the School of Education’s Department of Educational Psychology, as well as co-directors of the SMHC.
